Landscape of cancer genomics and precision oncology in Europe

A partir d'avis d'experts, de la littérature scientifique et des documents stratégiques, cet article dresse un état des lieux de la mise en oeuvre de la cancérologie de précision en Europe

Precision oncology (PO) has been a policy ambition in Europe for more than a decade; progress has accelerated since 2021 through Europe's Beating Cancer Plan and the EU Cancer Mission, which includes substantial investments. This review, developed in conjunction with The Lancet Oncology Commission on Cancer Genomics and Precision Oncology, maps the landscape of PO implementation across Europe, drawing on expert input, peer-reviewed literature, policy documents, and national implementation snapshots. Europe has achieved tangible, albeit uneven, progress in access to biomarker-driven therapies, molecular diagnostics, and use of molecular tumour boards whereas access to treatment is the next barrier. Europe's universally organised healthcare systems and collaborative infrastructure position the region to deliver equitable access in PO. Sustained progress requires harmonised implementation pathways, systematic real-world evidence generation, iterative decision-making and closer alignment of public and private expectations. Further efforts will capitalise on newly established regulatory frameworks and several EU-funded member state collaborations.
