Tobacco Cessation among Nondaily and Low-Intensity Smokers — Challenges and Opportunities in Latin America
Cet article fait le point sur les ressources nécessaires, en Amérique Latine, pour améliorer le sevrage tabagique chez les fumeurs dont le tabagisme est occasionnel ou de faible intensité
Smoking remains a major global public health challenge, with approximately 1.3 billion people worldwide consuming tobacco in various forms. Despite widespread awareness of its serious health risks — including cancer, heart disease, and respiratory conditions — the prevalence of smoking is still high, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Although tobacco-control policies such as indoor-smoking bans; pictorial health warnings; bans on advertising, promotion, and sponsorship; taxation; public education campaigns; and cessation programs have been shown to be effective strategies, progress is frequently hindered by socioeconomic disparities, cultural attitudes, and aggressive marketing by the tobacco industry.
