Challenges of data sharing: valuable but costly?
Menée à partir des données du "Project Data Sphere" portant sur 1 600 patients atteints d'un cancer de la prostate métastatique résistant à la castration et inclus dans des essais de phase III évaluant un traitement de première ligne, puis validée à partir de données portant sur 470 patients complémentaires, cette étude évalue la performance d'un modèle mathématique, développé de façon collaborative par plusieurs équipes de chercheurs et intégrant un ensemble de variables cliniques utilisées dans d'autres modèles prédictifs, pour prédire la survie globale des patients
Stephen Hawking wrote in the acknowledgments to his book A Brief History of Time that “Someone told me that each equation I included in the book would halve the sales.” In The Lancet Oncology, Justin Guinney and colleagues present one genuinely terrifying and possibly journal-subscription-halving mathematical function,1 in addition to some very technical language and ideas. It would be easy to glaze over and hurriedly move on, but to do so would be to overlook a pioneering piece of work with major implications for how clinical research data will be managed and reported in the future.
