Since the emergence and recognition of human papillomavirus-related (HPV+) oropharyngeal squamous-cell carcinoma as a distinct clinical entity, which has a more favourable prognosis compared with head and neck cancers arising from non-oropharyngeal sites and oropharyngeal cancer not associated with HPV (HPV–), clinicians have realised the inadequacy of the American Joint Cancer Committee on Cancer (AJCC) and Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) TNM staging classification for this disease.
