Review of Surgical Therapy of Adrenal Tumors in Guidelines From the German Association of Endocrine Surgeons

Adrenalectomy for the management of functional, nonfunctional, benign, and malignant adrenal tumors often presents biochemical, clinical, and technical challenges for surgeons. Improving the diagnosis, management, operative technique, and delivery of care has important benefits. Two years have passed since publication of the S2k guidelines1 on surgical therapy of adrenal diseases by the German Association of Endocrine Surgeons (Chirurgische Arbeitsgemeinschaft Endokrinologie [CAEK]) in Langenback’s Archives of Surgery. These guidelines1 were developed by an expert panel of CAEK surgeons and delegates from German societies of endocrinology, pathology, radiology, medical oncology, and nuclear medicine. As an update to the previous S1 guidelines,2 this guideline1 focused on surgical indications, preoperative diagnosis, perioperative management, and surgical approach of all functional, nonfunctional, benign, and malignant adrenal tumors.
