Employment provides important psychological and financial benefits for patients in terms of both income and health care benefits. For patients diagnosed with cancer, ongoing employment and return to work can promote a sense of normalcy and control during an emotionally challenging time.1,2 Job loss has been correlated with both short- and long-term financial distress among cancer survivors.3,4 Financial toxicity, which results from decreased earning and increased spending after a cancer diagnosis, is linked to increased symptom burden and emotional distress and to decreased quality of life and treatment adherence.5-11 Advanced financial toxicity (ie, bankruptcy) is associated with nearly double the risk of death among cancer survivors (odds ratio [OR], 1.79).
