US Preventive Services Task Force Breast Cancer Recommendation Statement on Risk Assessment, Genetic Counseling, and Genetic Testing for BRCA-Related Cancer

The US Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) provides a vital service in generating evidence-based recommendations about various preventive care services. At the risk of oversimplifying its extremely complex and labor-intensive efforts, the USPSTF can be described as a team of health care experts who synthesize available data regarding a spectrum of clinical prevention services and then provide objective recommendations for screening, counseling, or risk-reducing medications. Individuals chosen to serve on the task force have minimal risk for conflict of interest by virtue of representing primary care and preventive medicine. Subspecialty clinicians who provide care in the area of medicine affected by the proposed recommendations are specifically excluded from membership, although they are consulted and, in addition, every USPSTF recommendation is available for public comment and the opinion of specialty societies is sought by the USPSTF.
