Causes of death and conditional survival estimates of medium- and long-term survivors of pancreatic adenocarcinoma

Most patients who undergo resection of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) die within 5 years. Five-year survivors remain at risk for PDAC-related death, and recurrences more than 15 years after diagnosis are reported. A study reporting conditional survival (CS) extended only 6.5 years after diagnosis.Reported 10-year survival rates range from 3.9% in a National Cancer Database (NCDB) study to 12% to 13% in single-institution studies. In the NCDB study, the risk of death decreased for 6 years and then remained fairly constant at 10% per year in years 7 to 15, which was double that of an age- and sex-matched general population.
