Improving Lung Cancer Screening Among Patients With Experiences of Homelessness

Amid record-high rates of housing insecurity and striking evidence of the health harms associated with it, health systems are increasingly investing in interventions to improve health care access and quality among patients with housing insecurity. Patient navigation interventions—in which a trained individual guides patients through complex health care processes, addresses barriers to care, and ensures timely and appropriate follow-up—have emerged as a promising strategy to facilitate care among patients with housing insecurity and other social and medical challenges. Lung cancer screening, an evidence-based strategy to reduce lung cancer mortality, is an apt target for navigation interventions for populations with housing insecurity, who exhibit lower screening rates and higher lung cancer morbidity and mortality relative to the general population.
