Partial-breast irradiation: has the dust finally settled?
In The Lancet Oncology, Anna M Kirby and colleagues1 publish the long-term results of the randomised controlled IMPORT LOW trial of partial-breast irradiation after breast-conserving surgery in patients with low-risk, early-stage breast cancer, with a median follow-up of 10 years. Ipsilateral breast tumour recurrence (IBTR) rates remained at or lower than 3% at 10 years in the three trial treatment groups, without clinically relevant differences between the group receiving standard whole-breast radiotherapy (40 Gy in 15 fractions) and the experimental groups receiving either 36 Gy in 15 fractions to the whole breast plus 40 Gy in 15 fractions to the partial breast (reduced-dose group) or 40 Gy in 15 fractions to the partial breast (partial-breast group).
