New and old treatments for malignant mesothelioma: not just immunotherapy

Systemic therapy for malignant mesothelioma has relied on platinum and pemetrexedchemotherapy since 2003. Despite numerous clinical trials over almost two decades, no other cytotoxic chemotherapieshave shown a survival benefit in this disease in the first-line or second-line treatmentsettings. The first positive randomised trial to utilise a maintenance agent in mesotheliomawas the MAPS trial. This trial showed that adding the monoclonal antibody bevacizumab to chemotherapygave a further modest survival benefit, although it was not possible to separate outthe contribution of maintenance bevacizumab from that of concurrent bevacizumab with chemotherapy.
