Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second leading cause of cancer death in the United States. While we await the biomedical advances that will deliver preventive cancer vaccines or simple cures, reducing the burden of CRC today depends mostly on population-based screening. Yet, only about two thirds of Americans are up to date, leaving a large gap between the disease reduction tantalizingly within reach and that within grasp. The gap is not biological, but behavioral. It is held open in part by the organization, delivery, and financing of health care and in part by the engagement of clinicians and patients.
