USPSTF Recommendations and Colorectal Cancer in Younger Adults—Current Challenges and Future Opportunities

In recent years, the increasing incidence of colorectal cancer (CRC) in adults younger than 50 years has become a point of concern among experts. CRC is now the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in men and second among women in this population. In response to this increasing trend, in 2021, the US Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommended starting CRC screening at age 45 years. Notably, this recommendation carries a Grade B rating, indicating that while the supporting evidence is substantial, it is not as robust as the evidence for starting screening at age 50 years. This study by Siddique et al analyzed claims data from Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) to evaluate the changes in uptake of CRC screening among individuals aged 45 to 49 years following the updated USPSTF recommendation. Throughout the study period, between 3.1 and 3.4 million individuals were covered by BCBS, which is a representative sample of almost 20 million individuals in this segment of the US population, according to the US Census Bureau.
